Insurance Plans

We participate as panel members with VSP , Medicare, MES/ECN(Medical Eye Service/EyeCareNetwork), Spectera, VCP(VisionCare Plan), EyeMed and others but we must verify coverage before exam. We pride our ourselves in trying to make sure that our patient's take full advantage of all the insurance benefits for which they are eligible, and at times we have even uncovered insurance the patient didn't even know he or she had.  The more information we have the more information we can get.  Nearly all vision insurance plans require an authorization from the insurance company prior to rendering services to the patient.

Insurance benefits vary widely.  Some are discount plans that pay nothing for services and materials. Some plans, like Medicare, only pay for exam service when there is pathology involved, and pay nothing toward exams to determine eyeglass lens prescriptions or for glasses or contact lenses. Those plans that pay for eye exam services and materials often have copayment deductibles that must be paid by the patient before the insurance company pays anything.  When obtaining insurance authorization Dr Elman's office can find out what the benefits are for the member's plan.

To obtain the authorization certain confidential information must be obtained from and about the insurance member/patient including insurance ID number (often the social security number or the last 4 digits of the social security number), member's date of birth, and full name, as well as the patient's information, if the patient in not the primary member named on the insurance policy.  Without getting the required information before examination services are done may require the patient to pay for services at the time the services are performed.  The information obtained is used only to get insurance authorization and determine benefits and will not be shared with anyone but the patient's insurance company.

If patient has an insurance plan in which we do not participate as a plan provider(see first paragraph of this section) we expect payment from the patient at the time of services, and will give documentation to the patient who can then collect reimbursement from his/her insurer.
