CooperVision is one of the largest contact lens manufacturers in the world. They make several designs of toric soft contact lenses for astigmatism. The company acquired the California based Ocular Sciences, which makes several brands of disposable soft contact lenses. The most popular in the former Ocular Sciences line are Biomedics^� 38 and Biomedics^� 55 , the number indicating the water content of the lenses. The material of Biomedics^� 38 is Polymacon, the same material in Bausch and Lomb's Soflens^� 38, and one of the first materials used in soft contact lenses in the 1970s. Some people, especially those with dry eyes, found those earlier materials to be more comfortable than silicone hydrogels, which became available two decades later. Coopervision launched it first silicone hydrogel contact lens material in 2008 Avaira�, a 2 week disposable lens which has special wetting properties. Later Biofinity� and Biofinity� Toric became available, the latter of which has some of the largest parameters in silicone hydrogels to correct astigmatism. The silicone hydrogel conttact lenses transmit more oxygen and are approved for 1 week of continous wear. .Over the years the specialty of CooperVision has been special order toric contact lenses for astigmatism. Many of these designs are needed for patients with high amounts of astigmatism and were were originally made by another California company that CooperVision acquired, CoastVision. None of these lenses is made in Polymacon. Brand names of these lenses for astigmatism are Hydrasoft Toric, Preference^� Toric, Proclear^� Toric, Frequency^� 55 Toric, Biomedics^� Toric and Biofinity� Toric . Although the specially made toric lenses are individually made, and put in glass vials after fabricated, even the custom torics are now available in groups of 4 glass vials, at a cost close to what one of these contact lenses cost. That is, you might pay $150 for one lens, or $175 for 4 lenses. They consider the lenses in the 4 pack to be a 4 month, or Quarterly, disposable, but it is the same lens as the one in the single bottle. Marketing conditions--the trend in the ophthalmic field towards disposable contact lenses and poorer available contact lens care products (see Dr Elman's All About Contact Lens Care products) has driven the company to do this. In general the CooperVision soft toric contact lenses are still more expensive than other brands, but sometimes they make the only parameters that are available for patient's with high amounts of astigmatism or unusually shaped corneas.
