Acuvue� Contact Lenses from J and J Vistakon

Johnson and Johnson's contact lens division, Vistakon, was not a big time player in the contact lens field until they came up with the concept of disposable contact lenses, which they started marketing in the United States in 1989 under the name Acuvue�. Now they make and sell more contact lenses than anybody, with one and two week disposable contact lenses, one day disposable lenses, disposable colored lenses, and lenses for astigmatism and bifocals (which are not available in color). We used the original Acuvue^�and Acuvue 2� Contact Lenses in the office for years because of their comfort and clear vision. Nearly everyone who wore the original lens has been switched to newer Acuvue^� Oasys� lens designs and materials, although some prefer the original material, still available in Acuvue^�2. All Acuvue^� contact lenses filter UV light. Most of the Acuvue^� products have manufacturers rebates when an annual supply is purchased.

Before 2004 all of Vistakon's lenses were made of the same hydrogel material (etificon A), which is 58% water. In 2004 the company received FDA approval for a new higher oxygen permeable silicone hydrogel material (galyfilcon A) called Acuvue Advance� with Hydraclear. In 2005 Vistakon received approval for its lastest silicone hydrogel material ACUVUE� OASYS� with Hydraclear Plus(senofilcon A) which is promoted as even a better lens for dry eyes. It has FDA approval as a one week extended wear contact lens, and is recommended for 2 week replacement. Many patients have found the ACUVUE� OASYS� lenses to be more comfortable than other contact lenses, although they are more expensive than Acuvue 2 and Acuvue Advance. In 2008 it became available for the correction of astigmatism.

The first toric contact lens, or lens that corrects astigmatism, that was made in a silicone hydrogel material was ACUVUE� ADVANCE� for ASTIGM A TISM. In June of 2008 Vistakon launched an astigmatism version of its most comfortable material when it created ACUVUE� OASYS� for Astigmatism. Many people find it more comfortable and stable than other contact lenses that correct astigmatism. In 2009 Vistakon launched a multifocal in the Oasys� material--ACUVUE� OASYS� for Presbyopia.

There are two Acuvue^� brand contact lenses available for the ultimate in disposability--one day. Acuvue^� 1-Day Disposable contact lenses have been available for several years and, unlike the 2 week Acuvue^� contact lenses, which are available in packs of 6 contact lenses, the Acvuue^� 1-Day disposable contact lenses come in packs of 30. In 2007 the company released another daily disposable, Acuvue^� 1 Day Moist, which, in additon to availability in packs of 30 lenses, became available in 2010 at a discounted price in packs of 90.

In the original Acuvue^� material there are two groups of colored contact lenses. Acuvue^� 2 Colours Enhancer contact lenses have a more intense color tint than the light visibility tint of the other Acuvue lenses, but only make a color appearance difference when warn on the eyes of people having a light blue or gray iris. They are available in 3 colors: Ocean Blue, Aquamarine and Emerald Green. Acuvue^� 2 Colours Opaque contact lenses have irises painted on the lens and are available in more colors. They will change the appearance of eye color on people with any iris color, including dark brown and are available in 7 colors: Sapphire Blue, Deep Blue, Pearl Gray, Jade Green, Hazel Green, Warm Honey and Chestnut Brown.
